Playoffs week 2: Elite Operators

Hey, welcome back!!!

Okay, first things first, last week's picks:

Cowboys -4 WIN
Patriots -3 Lose
Patriots/Ravens OVER 43 WIN
Cardinals -1 WIN
Cardinals/Packers OVER 47 WIN

Not bad, 4-1. Always nice to get off to a hot start. Always nice.

I mean, errr, if gambling were LEGAL in this country, and if it was LEGAL to have an offshore sports betting account, you know, ahem, if I had really bet those games, it would be nice to get off to a hot start....

I started to get nervous about my Arizona pick Friday, when Bill Simmons wrote in his column that the two games that are destined to occur are "Colts-Patriots: 4th and Another Two" and "Favre-Packers: Apocalypse Now".

And in my gut, I felt that those games really were destined to happen.

I even went so far as to realize Sunday morning that, with the Cowboys complete dismantle-ation of the Eagles, Favre-Packers would be FOR THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP...

How could you cap the whole Favre-Packers thing better than that?? How could you?? The Packers, going to the Minnysoda Metrodome, to face the evil Judas one more time... insane (I'm borrowing the "Judas" from the pallet of Favre Hating Nation emails I have sitting here...) Insane. Stakes higher than imagineable. Literally, the loser of that game, it's over. Can you see Brad Childress calling in an air strike on the Metrodome?? Sure. Could you see Tedly Thompson going off the "Colonel Kurtz" edge, and hiding in the jungle surrounded by freaky natives?? Sure. Better yet, does Tedly call in Blackwater Security and fill the Lambeau Field parking lot with blacked-out GMC Yukons, and hard ass "operators" strolling the grounds with their earpieces, and A4's??? I can see it. They needed Ari Fleischer to handle PR after Favre, why not call Blackwater??? Angry fans, storming down the street from the Stadium View Bar towards Lambeau Field... only to be repelled by shock troops.... Can you see Ted Thompson, barricaded in his office, like Roger Van Zandt in "Heat", reeking of BO, afraid to step outside for fear Robert DeNiro will put a bullet in him?? I can see it!! Ahhh, hahaha, I CAN SEE IT HAPPENING!!!!

Taking a deep Breath... Letting it out.... Breathe.... and, I'm fine now..

Or not. Heh Heh. Well, those games are not gonna happen. Which leaves a slightly empty feeling, somehow.

However, on a related note, I heard the very excellent Michael Lombardi of nationalfootballpost.com on a podcast, and he was saying this might be a GOOD thing for the Patriots and Packers, because if we go into an uncapped year next year, which he thinks we will, there's some kind of restrictions on the top 8 teams from last year (this year) that limits their signing of free agents. Thus, the Packers, Patriots, Bengals, and Eagles just squirmed out of that. Which could be huge. If the Packers had a GM, that is...

Anyways, that Packer Cardinal thing was crazy. What a wild game. Wild. Postmortem: we weren't going to the Super Bowl anyway. We need offensive line help BADLY. We need a running back in the worst way. And it's time to blow up our special teams and start over. However, having said that, I think we might be a couple players away. So, if Tedly again won't sign any free agents, then, I think we need to get in our bunkers, cradle our assault weapons, and wait for a new GM...

And again, kicking (namely, bad kicking) played a huge role. Rackers, brutal miss. I jokingly commented that "he could miss this", never thinking he actually would.... whoops!! Then, in overtime, I'm thinking "Pleeeze, please don't let this come down to a Mason Crosby missed chip shot, please...." Whoops. My prayers were answered. Ahh, can I rephrase?? What I MEANT was, let's just go get a touchdown...

Actually, I love both the Cardinals and Packers, which is no secret to regular readers, so, in a way, I couldn't lose on this one. Which was kind of surreal...

Anyway, I did like how the Packers played. The Patriots utterly layed down. The Packers at least battled, and put up a heavyweight fight effort. I'm shocked Arizona didn't see the onside kick coming... and they had their chances. Rodgers could have hit the deep one in overtime, that's Johnny Ballgame, kids.... and that's a throw he generally makes look easy. I'm still shocked he missed that throw. Nevertheless, I remain on the Rodgers bandwagon. He is more than good enough to win with.

And in a way, that would have been a typical Warner loss, had the Packers won it in overtime. Warner would have been standing on the sidelines, 29 of 33, 379 yards, 5 TD's, no picks, and going home the loser.

How about dem Cowboys!!!! Absolutely true story, I have witnesses, I will provide signed affidavits: When I saw Donavon McNabb coming thru the stadium tunnel, prior to the game, playing the Air Guitar, clowning with fans, I announced to the room "This Game is Over." I didn't like where his head was at AT ALL. Which, as a Cowboys fan, translating, that means "I Effing Loved It!!!". And after Vick threw the TD pass in the first half, (while McNabb's stats to that point were sewer-worthy) the camera showed McNabb for a second, and his face was priceless. It was his vintage "Okay, you slobs think you can win without me??? Okay, let's see how that goes for the rest of this game..." Philly fans have put three large steak knives on their kitchen table, and are deciding which one to slash their wrists with.... Is there another team out there that reels in their fans, gives them hope, gives them a little more hope, builds them up, and then crushes their skulls against a brick wall better than the Eagles??? I can't think of one...

How about the QB's that are remaining in these playoffs. Unreal. Roll call. Favre. Manning (the good one). Brees. Rivers. Warner. Sanchez (The San-chise). Romo. Flacco.

Breaking it down, we have 3 Hall of Fame locks: Manning, Favre, Warner.

Two Hall of Fame probables: Brees and Rivers. (if I put Romo on this list, my email-server will crash again from hate mail, and it's probably a little too soon to tell, but, barring disaster, he could do it.)

I personally feel Romo is very special, is still improving, is playing great right now, and in some ways, he has the Cowboys playing their best football of the year right now. Sanchez impressed me. He might be something special. And Flacco, while the worst on this list by far, has at an early stage of his career shown himself to be a competent starter.

Anyways, should we move on to this weeks games??? Yeah, probably.

4:30 Eastern, Arizona Cardinals AT New Orleans Saints (-7) : Intriguing matchup. Every degenerate gambler knows that the teams with a bye have a gaudy record of big wins in this round of the playoffs. And, in the error of recentcy, we're more impressed with the shazaam of the teams we saw last week. The rested Saints. The explosive Cardinals. I say, take the Cards and the points. I love the Cards on offense. I see another shootout. The over-under is 57 though... Vegas seems determined to set this one high enough... I still like the over, but I'm not releasing that as an official pick. If you like it, go ahead, you have my blessing. That's a huge over-under number, though... Consider yourself warned.

8:15 Eastern, Baltimore Ravens AT Indianapolis Colts (-6.5): I'd love to love the Colts here. I'm not sure I'm totally comfortable, but I think you have to go Colts. Sure, we were all impressed with the Ravens last week, and they blew out the vaunted New England Patriots, but this is Peyton Manning. Brady clearly is not right, he's not healthy, he didn't look good. It's a little too easy to say "Ooooh, that Ravens Defense..." Yeah, whatever. After this game, we'll all be saying "Wow, that Peyton Manning, he's pretty good..." Over and Under is 44. I love overs, especially in playoff games. Sure, take the over.

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

1:00 Eastern. Dallas Cowboys AT Minnesota Vikings (-2.5): Well, in another case of Favre hating making strange bedfellows, I have lifelong Packer fans asking me, "Hey, can the Cowboys really beat the Vikings??? Reeeeaaallleeee?? Pleeeze say yes..." To which I say, yeah, they can. When you see DeMarcus Ware rush the passer, as a Favre hater, you're gonna love it. Okay, this game makes me a little nervous. Favre is dangerous. The Vikings, much in the mold of the Cowboys, have big beefy people on their O and D lines.

This is a tough one for me. Apology to Favre Hating Nation: I can't work up the hate for the guy. I'm sorry. I can't do it. The One Shining Moment of My Lifetime, as a Packer Fan, is Brett Favre winning the Super Bowl for us. I can't hate. I can't. So he wanted to win another Super Bowl. Is that so wrong?? Really?? Okay, was he a jerk during the process? Sure. Was Tedly a jerk? Absolutely. So, it is what it is. It wouldn't bother me at all if he won another one, with the Vikings. I'm sorry.

I am now bracing myself to receive the hate e-mails from Favre Hating Nation... Taking a deep breath.... and, okay, I'm ready.

Deliberating about this game.... DeMarcus Ware. Felix Jones. Tony Romo. Brett Favre. Adrian Peterson. Kevin Williams. Marion Barber. Miles Austin. Percy Harvin.... Processing....

I have to take the Cowboys. I just have to. The Cowboys, and points, I cannot resist. I can't. They beat the Saints... This game is basically a trip to the Super Bowl. Do I dare to dream the impossible dream, Cowboys winning the Super Bowl??

Waitaminute, if the pathetic Giants could beat the Patriots, back when they really were the VAUNTED Patriots, anything could happen....

Actually, another factor could be the "dirty little secret" in Minnysoda, and that is that some of these playoff games haven't sold out in the past. There could be a noisy contingent of Cowboys fans in the Metrodome. I dunno, I'm just saying. That Eagles playoff game a year or two ago, that was like half Eagles fans, or so I'm told... also, another "source" tells me that something close to half of the Vikings season ticket holders DECLINED their option on playoff tickets... Could be BS, but I wonder...

Over-Under of 45.5, I'm taking the over. This is a solid over-style game.

4:40 Eastern, New York Jets AT San Diego Chargers (-7): I'm not gonna go crazy on this one, I'm going Chargers. Don't overthink it. Look, with the Patriots out, we're headed for a Chargers-Colts Armageddon style clash for AFC supremacy. And it should be a great one. The San-chize goes down this week. It's okay, he's just a rookie. He's just a pup!!! He'll be okay.

Over-Under of 42, again, I like the over. San Diego can score. I think Rivers shines in front of a psyched home crowd.

So, here's your slate:

Cards +7
Colts -6.5
Ravens Colts OVER 44
Cowboys +2.5
Vikings Cowboys OVER 45.5
Chargers -7
Jets Chargers OVER 42

Last week: 4-1
Postseason Total: 4-1

Enjoy!!!

Round One: Back on Base In Time for the Playoffs!

Greetings, fellow football fans. As Bruce Willis (in his role as Colonel Devereaux) so famously said in "The Siege" (co starring Annette Benning and Denzel Washington), "I intend to finish this operation and be back on base in time for the Playoffs!" Amen, brother.

Now then, you might recall (and you can comb through the old posts in this blog to verify for yourself) that last year, besides a hiccup with the Giants, I gave you a lot of winners. Let's see if I can repeat.

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

NY Jets AT Cincinnatti Bengals (Bengals -2.5): I started to believe in Cincy after they beat the Steelers and Ravens twice. Some of my real degenerate buddies have been waiting for this weekend, to unload big time on whoever Cincy faces. They're cooling on that opinion now, however. I think they pictured it being the Ravens, or someone else...

Personally, stay away from this game. You almost have to feel like the Jets are the better team at this point, but do you really want a rookie quarterback, from southern California, in cold weather, on the road, in the playoffs?? Or do you want the Bengals, with 1 wideout right now?? If you held a gun to my head, I'd say take the Jets and the points, but I wouldn't feel good about it. Even saying that though, if some of these teams try, the Jets aren't even here right now.... I just have a bad feeling.

Philadelphia Eagles AT Dallas Cowboys (Cowboys -4): I love the Cowboys in this one. (Big surprise.) Seriously, I heard a great analogy this week: The Eagles are like the Phoenix Suns... when 3-pointers are going in, they look great. If not, they are very beatable. The Eagles don't run. They rely heavily on the deep ball. Their defense is built to play with a lead. The Cowboys Defense apparently can cover their wideouts. Their backup center has no hope whatsoever against the Dallas front four, which was made painfully obvious last week. Tony Romo is playing out of his mind. The new Texas Stadium (Cowboys Stadium??) will be rocking 100,000 strong... Take the 'Boys.

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Baltimore Ravens AT New England Patriots (Patriots -3): I like the Patriots here. I know, Brady is probably waaaay more banged up than they're saying, Undrafted sensation Wes Welker is out... Patriots have been real tough at home this season. They're destroying people. Flacco, if anything, is regressing... I love the Pats in this spot. I also love the OVER 43 on this. Bill Belichek, the prince of the cut-off sleeve hoodie, is not averse to running up the score. He does not recoil in horror at the thought... and when Baltimore gets down 21 to nuthing, they'll start throwing...

Green Bay Packers AT Arizona Cardinals (Arizona -1): This line was -3, now it's minus 1. Hmmm. This game is a real enigma. A real enigma. Either one of these teams is capable of laying a turd at any moment. And, either team is capable of lighting it up. Packers played the easiest schedule in the NFL this year. The easiest. Do you know who played the second easiest?? The Arizona Cardinals. Allegedly, from the pundit-ocracy out there, Ken Whisenhunt and the Cards are unhappy with how the Packers have played them. You may recall we clobbered them in a meaningless preseason game, and we clobbered them last week, in a meaningless game, where our starters played a long time, deep into the second half.

Let's back up a second. There's been a lot of talk about who was trying and who wasn't. My take, real quick. Cards, not trying. Not at all. Not for 1 second. And it showed. Eagles, trying, for a little while, and failing. Cincy, trying for a little while, then the towel was thrown in. Thus, I put some weight on Dallas's win last week, and no weight whatsoever on Green Bay's win.

Also, there are mathematical possibilities for the Packers to travel to Minnnnnysooo-taaah and meet the Vikings.... again. Again!!! Favre Hating Nation is putting on their tin-foil hats right now... Put that on the back burner, let it simmer for a second.

Anyways, I personally think this is a case where the error of recentcy (the thing that happened more recently) is taking hold. In the back of my mind, I love the Cards in this game. I love their playoff experience. I love that they have some veterans. I love that they're at home. Packers are young. And on the road.

Another X factor: Do you know who has the worst special teams in the National Football League?? Yes, your Green Bay Packers. Which I suspected all along. Now, when you're winning 24 to nothing, nobody cares if your field goal kicker misses a 30 yarder, or your punter is kicking 30 yards, net 9 after the return... Some of the big leads have really spackled right over that glaring hole.... Can that bite you on the tookus in the Playoffs?? It might. It might.

Another X factor is the Packers Offensive line. The barrage of holding penalties, false starts, and illegal formations could rise up and bite us on the behind....

I'm also slightly intrigued, I did read one pundit who thought officiating was the key. He felt the Packers secondary was continually using their hands, and that their wins and losses this season really depended on whether they were calling it or not. He feels that if they start calling PI on Tramon Williams continual arm-bars, Charles Woodson's continual late chucks, and so on, that this game will be over real quick.

On the other hand, I personally feel there is a tendency to "let them play" in the playoffs....

Thus, I would say, take the Cardinals, and be glad you only have to lay 1 point. Not so much the spread, but the real bet here is the OVER 47. Cards could score 47 themselves. Or lets say the Packers go up 10 to nothing, it turns into a deep southwest shootout and ends up 48-42... I could see that.

So, here you go:
Cowboys -4
Patriots -3
Patriots/Ravens OVER 43
Cardinals -1
Cardinals/Packers OVER 47

Enjoy!

Week 17: Sweep Complete, back to base for the Playoffs

Hey, Welcome to 2010!!!

Hope everyone had a nice holiday. I sure did.

Well, first off, Badgergil has won week 17 in a tiebreaker. Nice job man.

Real tough week. Who's going to play? Who's going to sit?? Who has something to play for??? If a morning game goes a certain way, afternoon team X will have nothing to play for. Hmmm. Sure, let me make my picks.....

Oddly enough, I thought many of the lines were crap. As it turns out, if you took the favorites, you'd have won 14 games straight up. None of us did that. Who could have guessed that Vegas pros might know what they're doing when they set these lines..... Hmmm....

Well, in a truly dasterdly move, HighZ called me last week, and congratulated me on winning the season. Which, upon reflection, was an attempt to put the old hex on me... It didn't work, but it did cause me to change my picks 20 times... I started off with 15 on the Vikings... should have left THAT one alone... Whoops.

Anyone see that Vikings Giants contest??? Wasn't really a contest. I ask in jest, because after the Bears beat the Vikings, my inbox was filled with triumphant comments from Favre Hating Nation.... This morning, the silence was deafening... Tom Coughlin must have had his dosage adjusted, he seemed to maintain composure throughout.

Lotta talk about the Colts, and resting players... And to me, all you need to see is Wes Welker going down, to realize that hey, don't get someone hurt at this juncture. I'm more intrigued, however, by Eli Manning remaining in that game. They were losing bad. No hope. Now, Eli Manning is a Fraud, but he is the guy for the Giants, like him or not. Do you REALLY want him hurt in an utterly meaningless blowout loss??? Really? That game was over at the half. I give Eli's helmet to a trainer, and tell him to throw it on the team bus and lock it in a locker. No way he goes back in.

Anyways, it's been a helluva season. Thanks to everyone for playing. I hope you had as much fun as I did.

You may recall last year's season's champion, perennial power picker SEARS. Sears I trust has enjoyed the title for a year. He had a slightly down year this year. We'd be foolish to think he won't come roaring back next year.

Once again, I have claimed a Season's Champion title. Many of you are amazed by that, but none more so than me. I really never felt I was doing that great. And I took the lead waaaay too early, I assumed someone would pass me by.

2nd thru 5th for the season was real close all year. Badgergil's week 15 win put him in the picture, and he has captured second for the season. Congrats, man.

HighZ was in 4th for the season, and desperately needed a Jets win to capture 3rd place for the season. And he got it!!! For someone who spent weeks in second, week 17 could have been a nightmare. HighZ edged Leo Woods, last year's 3rd place season winner, out of a back-to-back 3rd place finish. Very close. Congrats man. Despite that attempted jinx... No, seriously, congrats.

Most of us still have painful memories of the weekly wins from 2008. To relive the horror, VBS won 4 weeks, Badgergil won 4 weeks, and Kathb4 won 3 weeks. 3 players claimed 11 of the 17 weeks. For the rest of us, that was painful.

This year, no sophmore slump for Erin07. No, he hit his stride and won 3 weeks. Nice job man! Badgergil, VBS, Patrick686, and Ronfic each won 2 weeks.

I always like to compare how we did against so-called "expert" handicappers....

Patrick686 180-76

Accuscore Computer picker 178-78

Badgergil
HighZ 174-82
Michael Silver (Yahoo Sports)

Sears
Chris Mortensen(ESPN) 173-83

Leo Woods
Adam Schefter(ESPN) 169-87

Ronfic
Jumbo Y Genius 168-88
Erin07

Florida Boys DD 167-89

Smitty201 166-90

Elusive 165-91

Kathb4
Sean Leahy(USA Today) 164-76

VBS
Pete O'Brien(USA Today) 163-93

I would have to say that overall, better than half the players in this pool are as good as people who do this for a living.... Not bad. You should all feel very very good about yourselves...

Now obviously, in this pool, confidence points are the key. And this isn't necessarily a recipe for success in this pool. Sharpcheddar won more money than several people on this list. I'm just saying, for picking straight up winners, we have acquitted ourselves real well.

Well, enjoy the playoffs!!! Checks will go out shortly.

I may continue to offer my thoughts during the playoffs, for "entertainment" purposes only, naturally... heh heh. I find it entertaining to win money offshore, what can I say....

Again, these football seasons fly right by. Thanks to everyone for playing. I hope to see you all next year!!!

Week 16: Running out of Spare Magazines...

Hey, good morning!!!

Well, another football filled weekend is wrapping up.

Obviously, last week Badgergil stomped a mud-hole in our faces... Ouch. Nice job man. I had nearly the exact same picks, yet I end up with 88, he has 111. His points (clearly) were different, though....

For this weeks action, more to the point, Erin07 is clinging to a 1 point lead. And thus, he has become a big Bears fan for tonight. Almost as big as Ardita.

Actually, this might not be a stretch. Erin07 may have some Bears sympathies. I've urged him to seek medical help, but...

Now, in case of a (very) likely Vikings win, Patrick686 (thats me!), Air Myles, and Smitty201 will tie, I believe... So, note to Brett Favre: Hey man! If the Bears get 3 field goals, try to score like 33 points, for my tiebreaker. I've had your back through this whole Packer thing, okay buddy, so do this for me... Thanks. Best Regards, Patrick in Pewaukee.

Packers blew out the Seahawks... Early in that game, I had a real bad feeling. Apparently, it was too many nachos, or something. Seahawks were moving the ball, until Matt Hasselbeck threw that absurd pick to AJ Hawk... Lotta Hawk Haters in my inner circle. I have no problem with the guy. Maybe if he did some kind of sammurai sword thing every time he makes a frickin' tackle, people would love him. I dunno.

Ahhh, note to Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson: Jeremy Kapinos, our punter, sucks. He sucks. He sucks!!! Yeah, that was a blowout, true dat, but his punts... several didn't gross 35 yards. 2 didn't gross 30 yards. Kicking either way, so, don't tell me about the wind. And then with the runbacks of these 30 yard low line-drive bullets, the runbacks are ridiculous. We netted less than ten yards on a couple of punts. Ten yards. Ten. So look fellas, we may as well go on fourth down, if we're only gonna net ten yards.

Speaking of going on fourth, how did you like Jim Zorn last night?? 5 minutes and change remaining, down 17 to nuthin... And you could clearly see him on the headset saying "I wanna Punt!!" to someone. Huh?? Whaaa? Coach, you need 3 scores... Coach, put the Crystal Head Vodka down for a second, listen, you need three scores, there's no time!

This Cowboys team is starting to remind me of the 07 Giants who won the Super Bowl.

Waitaminute, how about the Giants getting dismantled yesterday.... Awesome! Tom Coughlin looked like he had a dog turd in his mouth... Oh wait, he always looks like that, never mind... and both Eli and Peyton Manning were pacing the sidelines with disgusted looks on their faces... Awesome....

Anyways, back to the Cowboys, who had another big win. Okay, it was over the reeling Redskins, but still... It pains me to compare anything to the Giants, but here we go:

1. In 07, The Giants were limping into the playoffs, leaking oil, hitting on 5 out of 8 cylinders. Cowboys? As of 2 weeks ago, check.

2. In 07, the Giants started playing tough near the end of the season, when it appeared pointless. Cowboys? Check.

3. In 07, (unlike now), lots of people were calling Eli Manning a fraud, a pretender, a bust, a waste... Tony Romo taking a lotta heat this December?? BIG checkmark... despite playing well, all anyone ever asks him is about his record in December. (And when I say "unlike now", I mean I am still calling Eli The Fraud That Is Eli Manning. Others seem to have gotten on board with the little goofball.)

4. In 07, Tom Coughlin and his face were merely playing out the string, waiting to be fired. Wade Phillips? Big Checkmark. 3 weeks ago, they'd already penciled in the date of the press conference where Jerry would fire Big Wade... Hell, I myself, in this blog, have probably made sarcastic comments about Wade Phillips imminent departure.

So, I dunno. It feels eerily similar. There's two "Teams of Destiny" out there (Indy and the Saints) waiting to claim their "inevitable" Super Bowl, just as the Patriots were going to claim their "inevitable" trophy, and cap their perfect season. The Cowboys have talent. They could surprise some people. I love how Romo is playing right now.

And thanks a bunch Roy Williams, for letting ANOTHER pass ricochet off of your hands of stone, and get picked off. True, I've had a lot of fun with Braylon Edwards, The Human Dropped Pass. Braylon has single-handedly kept Terrell Owens from leading the league in dropped passes for two years. T.O. probably sends Braylon Christmas Gifts. So maybe I've been a little hard on the guy. He's just a kid from the mean streets of Detroit, who played college ball at Michigan, and then, sadly, was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. He finally got traded to the Jets midseason. Anyway, my point is, for some strange perverted reason, Roy Williams has apparently decided that he WANTS THE TITLE. He wants to be The Human Dropped Pass.

Who wants that??? Roy, call your office, get some stick-'em, whatever... ugh. Sadly, there are some paralells here. Braylon Edwards was drafted #3 overall. Roy Williams, #7 overall. I was gonna go on a receiver diatribe, I don't even feel like it. Note to Roy Williams: start f*ck*ing catching the G*d D*mned football. Best Regards, Patrick.

Taking a few deep breaths, to calm down.... and, that's better...

Anyways, Kyle Orton tried to lead a furious comeback over the Eagles, and it looked good for awhile.... Bear Fans watching that game probably had to be placed in restraints, to keep from gouging their own eyes out with the nearest pen, pencil, whatever.... I look at Kyle Orton, in a Denver uni, and I just can't hardly believe, that right there is the dude who could not beat sexy Rexy Grossman out of a job.... Unreal. And after tonight's embarrassing loss to the Vikings, that Lovie Smith contract extension is going to start to feel a lot like that Charlie Weis contract extension....

Whoops, sorry, put the Bear Fans back in their restraints.... sorry, my bad...

Anyway, enjoy tonights game. After that, it's ONE MORE WEEK. One.

Well, okay, then there's playoffs, sure, but... Soak it in, people. Soak. It. In.

Wow, how about these college bowls. Ugh, could we have a few more upsets?? I'm already dead in the water in my college pools. The Florida Boys know what I'm talking about.... whew. It's been several days since a Tiger Woods mistress has come forward. I miss it already....

Later!

Long Range Shooting..Further than 25 yards???

Hey, welcome back....

Well, congrats to Ronfic, for his win last week... Nice job. My Cardinals lost, costing me a lotta points. They're still in a room with a bunch of calculators, adding up how many picks Kurt Warner threw. Ugh!!

I see Arizona did manage to hold off the vaunted Detroit Lions, getting my 16 point pick tied up to the dock.

Anyways, how about those Cowboys!!!! Nobody gave them a chance. Except for me, and Badgergil, and Florida Boys DD, and Sears.... VBS, no faith in the squad. Hmmm. Folk missed ANOTHER super short field goal... Ugh. These kickers...

In earlier action today, Tennesse was leading by 15 all afternoon.... and then Pow, tied up, a minute-something to go. Waaaay too much drama... Atlanta was losing all day... right till the last minute there.

Steelers needed 1 play to go up 7-nothing. Nice. And The Great Crosby has already missed a field goal....

3:55 remaining, 2nd quarter, bounce off the hands, almost picked off by the Steelers... Steady fellas.

Aaron Rodgers, takes it in himself!!! From 20 yards out!!! What a run! I have NO CLUE what the celebratory hands at the belt gesture was all about.... I'm not sure I wanna know. Crosby comes out, and NEARLY MISSES the extra point!!! Gaaahh! Yanked HARD LEFT. Ted Thompson, call your frickin' office, this guy is DONE. An extra point really shouldn't send your beer and crackers surging up from your stomach. You really shouldn't need a plastic-lined wastebasket for an extra point.... Yikes. Yeeesh. I'm gonna have to get some Pepto Bismol and have it ready here in front of the big screen, in preparation for Crosby's next attempt of anything.

27 seconds left in the half, Pittsburgh goes up 21-14, a few big pass plays on that drive.... Funny, the Steelers' place kicker made that extra point look easy...

Moving right along, 2nd half underway, Coach Mike McCarthy tries to challenge an obvious completion along the sidelines... Nice. Blow a second half timeout, while you're losing, on the road, in a hostile environment... Good going coach. I also love the pained look on his face when they announced the play stands as called.

**********

Okay, I set my laptop down for awhile... Too many snacks, whew. It is now Monday morning.

Wrap-up thoughts on the Packer game: in a word, unreal. Again, Aaron Rodgers did enough to secure a comeback win. The Packer D, on the other hand, did not. I will say that Packer fans in my house were screaming at the TV, urging the squad to go for the TD, and not put this game on Crosby's leg... And lo and behold, that's what they did!! It LOOKED like a win, for a minute there....

And it wasn't enough. Turns out I needed the Packers desperately to win, to keep my slim hopes alive in a different pool. And, they did not.

Biiig Sigh... You hitch your wagon to these Packers at your own risk, truly. Biiiig Siiiigh

Another note from that game: What exactly was Dr Foreman doing over there, on the opposite sideline??? Onside kick, with 3 and change to go, while you're LEADING??? At the time, I was baffled, and couldn't make any sense out of it. In the icy cold grey dawning light of Monday Morning, it makes no sense at all. Leading by 2, no less... If the Packers actually had a field goal kicker on the roster right now, all we have to do is kick the FG, and boom. I don't get that one at all. Talk about outsmarting yourself.... wow.

Speaking of December swoons, (wait, were we speaking of December swoons?? I guess we are now...) While the Cowboys got a big win, and Tony Romo continues to play well, a certain dude on the Vikings just lost another one. And got in a big argument with his head coach, to stay in the game. Hmmm. Uhhhmmmm Hmmmm. Yeah... Favre Hating Nation will love that he was sacked 4 times, no TD's, 1 late meaningless pick.

Actually, I wonder how Carolina Fan feels after Matt Moore came in and played great. You stuck with Jake Delhomme all season. Now, true, you're paying Delhomme a ton of money to sit on the bench, but...

Matt Moore: 21 off 33, 299 yds, 3TD's. Not bad. Another strange game, Minny-so-cold was up 7-6 (on a missed John Kasay extra point, ugh) until Carolina exploded for 20 in the 4th quarter.

(And again, Jake, Nick, Kevin, et al, if you're not working hard to be a football kicker, you're missing the boat... and you're missing the bevy of college co-eds who can't wait to "get busy" with the dude who kicked the game winning field goal... A plethora of girls.... a myriad of girls... whatever...)

Speaking of Jake Delhomme, you can check out a lot of very interesting articles on a site called http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/

Michael Lombardi and Andrew Brandt have great articles on there. Worth checking in on from time to time. Andrew Brandt last week broke down what JaMarcus Russell is really going to cost the Raiders... His career appears to be over. The Raiders started Charlie Frye yesterday, and got a win. His bust status now has to be near the Ryan Leaf or Tony Mandarich area. There's thin air up that high on Mount Bust-more... Throw in how high he was picked, and how, like it or not, he's going to end up with $40 million dollars from the Raiders.... Breathtaking bust.

Author's note: I just re-read that sentence, and saw that I mis-typed $0 Million... It didn't have the same impact, somehow. I bet the Raiders wish it was $0 Million...

Brandt also has a slightly older post on there about what Delhomme is really going to cost the Panthers. Great stuff.

Heisman: I don't really care about the Heisman that much, but isn't it time to AT LEAST start giving 2 Heismans, one for offense, 1 for defense??? In the last 70 years, 3 guys who were not halfbacks or quarterbacks won the award. Three. So instead of saying "Best Player in College football", why not just say "Running Back or Quarterback who received the Most Hype.", and let it go at that....

Anyway, Badgergil is untouchable at this point. Congrats to him for a big win. Badgergil crushed us so badly, he passed up Leo Woods for 3rd in the season standings. Ouch. That's gonna leave a mark. As the E-Trade Baby would say, he just issued us a beat-down... 11 on the Cowboys. I wanted to do that, I just couldn't bring myself to it. I really had a feeling about that one. I dunno what I'm crying about though, even if I move my 15 from the Vikings to the Cowboys, he still beats me by ten....

Well, I have to go now, but let say Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your families.

Also, here's a little tip: Don't buy an Amazon Gift Card. Just don't. I order a gift card from amazon, along with some other stuff. The other stuff comes, there's no gift card in the box. I send my complaint letter to amazon, they write back, no problem, we'll process your refund. A day later, I get an email "Oh, that gift card has been used by an unauthorized party. We can't refund you. Call your credit card company and stop that charge."

Huh?? Number One, you're Amazon!! It's all internet based!! Find out who used that card, and give their name and address to the authorities, and have them arrested for using a stolen gift card!!! Is that so hard?? Number Two, since when is calling your credit card company and cancelling the transaction a normal course of refunding money?? Very strange. So I gotta call my credit card company this morning, I guess.... I need a personal assistant. I really do. I have things to do here. Like I got all day to fart around with this crap. So, take a lesson, never buy a gift card from amazon.

Have fun, and good luck next week!!!

Rain turned to Ice... Winter Gloves: On.

Well, good morning Switzerland!!!

Actually, it's a LOT WARMER in Switzerland right now than it is here.... 48 in Geneva. Zero here. Hmmm.

Well, I guess putting 16 on the Steelers was a pretty good idea. They're not gonna lose 5 in a row, right?? Against the lowly Cleveland Browns?? Naaah. 'Course not. Don't be ridiculous. Their season is on the line....

Whooops!!!! Gaaahhh! Dooh!!

Question: Why couldn't the Cardinals face THOSE Steelers last February??? Yeah, those Steelers, who allow 8 sacks a game, who can't run... Yeah. Hmm.

Well, what's bad for me might be good for VBS... He "only" had 11 on Dr. Foreman's team, errr, I mean, Mike Tomlin's Team. Sorry.

If you don't watch "House", you missed that, so google up the actor Omar Epps, who plays Dr. Foreman on House, and you tell me he isn't Mike Tomlin's long lost twin brother.

Headline: (straight from Yahoo Sports, cut and Paste) Romo not thrilled to hold, but willing to do it.

Dateline: IRVING, Texas (AP)—Tony Romo doesn’t really want to be a holder again for what he calls “obvious reasons.”

Yet if having him hold will help kicker Nick Folk regain his accuracy, then Romo is willing to resume the role that left him in tears the last time he did it for the Dallas Cowboys.

Heck, he even volunteered for it.

“When you’re the quarterback of a football team, really all that matters is winning,” Romo said Thursday. “If this helps us do that, I’m doing to do it. … Pops told me one time, `Leadership is doing what has to be done.”’

Romo bobbled his last hold for Dallas, in a January 2007 playoff game in Seattle. The flub cost the Cowboys a chance to beat the Seahawks and it left Romo tearfully apologizing to his teammates afterward. He asked to hold at the Pro Bowl a few weeks later and hadn’t done it again until this week. He’d never worked with Folk, who arrived the season after Romo gave up holding to concentrate on being solely the quarterback.

*****

My thoughts: Please. I'm fed up with all the "Blaming Romo" for Cowboys losses. Now we have an idiot kicker who is going to blame his holder for his absurd missed kicks. Riiiight. And again, you dudes ages 9 thru 16, if you're not out there kicking and punting.... I dunno. I throw my hands up in exasperation. Obviously, you could easily make a few hundred grand a year if you could make a few field goals.

Yeah, this idea that Romo somehow needs to "contribute more" to the team, underlying in that article, is real annoying as well. Like, somehow, he's not REALLY a "good quarterback."

Let's go to the line, shall we?? (cut and pasted from Yahoo Sports)

Tony Romo:
QB Rat Comp Att % Yds Avg TD Int
Week 13 (@NYG) 1 112.1 41 55 74.5 392 392.0 7.1 3 0

Uh huh. 41 of 55 for 392, 3 TDs, NO picks. Wow, what a loser. Really, bring back Brad Johnson, before it's too late.... Gadzoooks. What a frickin' bum...

(/sarcasm mode off)

Yeah, well, so, rest easy Cowboys Fans... instead of working on how to beat the Chargers, Tony is going to spend his extra time this week working with the long snapper.... Nice. Real nice. Jerry Jones, pick up the white courtesy telephone, reality is on the line for you.... Wade, you may wanna just hold onto the mortgage payment check.... You may be leaving soon.

I'd seriously like to know, where's your backup wide receivers??? Get one of your diva wideouts to hold... Supposedly such great ball handlers, okay, get your butt out there and hold for placekicks!!! Our starting QB has BETTER THINGS TO DO!!!

Alright people, enjoy the games. It's waaay too frickin' cold out to do anything but hunker down inside and plant yourself firmly in front of your big screen.

Week 13: Keeping my powder dry in heavy rain...

Greetings!

Well, First off, Congrats to Erin07 for his win last week.... New Orleans blasted the Vaunted New England Patriots. I didn't see that coming, actually. Are the Patriots still "vaunted" anymore??? Or are they now just the Patriots. Hmmm. With a loss yesterday at Miami, they're being humbled a little more each week. So, nice win for Erin07, his second of the year.

I gotta hand it to Sharpcheddar as well. 10 on Arizona. Wow. I had the Arizona Cardinals, but I didn't have the stones to put 10 on it. I like that strategy though. Kathb4 and Leo Woods had Minnesota heavy, too. Which seems crazy, but if the pick comes in, that will launch you up the standings...

Looks like Sharpcheddar has it in the bag already. Congrats, man!

I really wanted to watch that game, but I am ashamed to say I fell asleep. Sad, really. So I didn't see My Cardinals take apart the vaunted Vikings...

I can only imagine how happy the "Favre Hating Nation" is this morning.... Upon further reflection, I can see where my Father might cheer for the Arizona Cardinals to beat Brett Favre. I get that. But the Chicago Bears?? Really?? It's gonna take a few years of therapy for me to get over that one.... Seriously, there's t-shirts you could buy for years up here, they say "My two favorite teams are the Packers and whoever plays the Bears." Pulling for the Bears.

Whats really going on there is, my Dad has been kidnapped by space aliens. So, call the spaceship fellas, and bring my Dad back.... You're not fooling anyone. Actually, that also explains why I'm getting insect bites at his house, and he's not... The Florida sand fleas hate the taste of the alien blood. His computer network is really screwy too.... It's all starting to make sense now... Hmmmm...

Another mystery solved. Well, for Favre Hating Nation, here's a few photos for you:

These Vikings fans flew a long ways to hold up this sign... And be dead wrong!

This guy threw 2 picks. First multi-interception game of the year for him.

Larry Fitzgerald, a beast, being congratulated by Mr Favre.

Larry had a nice game....

Warner had a nice game too, back from his concussion...

There is a game of some significance tonight. If the Packers aren't total pretenders, they need to win. Sadly, the Ravens are desperately clinging to a playoff spot, so they need a win bad. I have a bad feeling for Aaron Rodgers. If he is killed tonight, can we bring our offensive line (except Mark Tauscher) up on manslaughter charges?? Reckless disregard, something like that?? I'm not sure, maybe I should consult a lawyer.

Also, there's a kicking job open in Dallas this morning. Ugh!! Dallas may have lost, but I blame the D, I blame the special teams. I do not blame Tony Romo.

Again, if your son, nephew, cousin, whatever, is not kicking, you are an idiot.

Review these links carefully, supposedly the finest kicking camps in the country:

feelykicking.com
prokicker.com
pelfreykicking.com

Seriously... Jake. Dalton. Nick. Kevin. Mark. Tom. You guys know who you are. Start kicking!!! I wanna see you guys hitting the game winner, like Hunter Lawrence of The Texas Longhorns, drilling that 46 yarder to win the game. There's a post on the Longhorns website this morning, "Hunter Lawrence for Governor!!"

And let me tell you something fellas: if you think you can't pick the girl of your choice after you hit that game winner.... think again!!!

Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow torpedoed their Heisman Hopes Saturday... ugh.

People (or, national sports radio pundits) seemed positively giddy with Tim Tebow's loss. Why is there so much hate for Tebow??? Is it so wrong to have a Christian belief, here in a Christian country?? Really?? Would you like him better if he was a slimy Muslim??

Would you like him better if his hot Swedish girlfriend busted out all the windows of his Escalade with a 3-iron?? And then like 6 of his other girlfriends came forward??

Ahhh, that's been done to death already... Enjoy tonights game!!
